Welcome everyone! It’s Day 5 and we’re looking at I Fit In Just Right by Sherrika Carpenter Stanley.

Scroll down to see the interview with her!

Welcome, Sherricka Carpenter Stanley, to LeafPages Book Blog. Good morning, and welcome! Shall we sit and have a chat? Could you please introduce yourself to those reading this blog post?

Sherricka: Greetings to you all in Blog World. I am Sherricka Carpenter Stanley. I am a mother, wife and author. I am a former educator of 20+ years of students in both middle and High School. I am the lover of a rainy day, football, flannel pajamas and a good book. I am passionate about the things and people that I love. That’s me in a nutshell.

Has writing always been part of your life and when did you “know” that it was time to start writing your first book?

Sherricka: Yes. Writing has always been a part of my life. From writing speeches in all grades when I was in school, to poems for my family, to just writing my thoughts, it has always been an integral part of who I am. I knew it was time to write my book, well actually bring my book to the world when I decided to take the leap from educator to full time writing in Spring of 2020 during the pandemic.

How difficult was it writing your first book?

Sherricka: It honestly wasn’t difficult at all to write my first book. I wrote it one night after being inspired while holding my daughter when she was a baby. I saw how she “fit in just right” into my arms and had the thought of how babies seem to fit in all of our nooks and crannies. From there, I put her down in her crib and ran and typed out what I heard in my thoughts!

Have you ever wanted to give up and what stopped you?

Shericka: Umm, not so far. I have enjoyed the journey of writing. Because it is still so new, I have not had any days when I felt like I no longer wanted to write. In fact I’m even more excited as opportunities start to come up and I see just how much people still love reading the written word!

Who is the most supportive of you and your dream to be a writer?

Sherricka: I would have to say my family and closest circle frients are the most supportive. But, I also have to add that I have recently come across people that are new to my circle and their early support so far has been unwavering.

Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

I would love to tell them to find that thing that you are passionate about and pursue it! Go for the dreams that you want for your life no matter what age you are. I am living my dreams and I am 47 years old. This is just the beginning!! Begin anew, today!

What is the best advice given to you (book or otherwise), and by whom?

The best advice or probably the quote that I say most often came from my favorite teacher in HS, Mrs. Scott. I’ll give you the simple one first. The first one she told me is “Don’t take it personal.” Simple as put, I have learned with time that that is the truth. The other one that she would say is, “There are no bad experiences, only learning experiences”. This one’s my favorite because it taught me perspective. To see things as not bad, but more of an opportunity to learn.

What is your target audience and what aspect of your writing do you feel targets that audience?

I would have to say my target audience for right now is children of color. My desire is to reach them right now because we all know that representation matters, but I want to not just say it, I want to do something about it. So I would have to say they are my target audience right now. I do have some projects coming up that will target the middle school to college level Black male. And another one that I want to target Black men and women. So, my work runs the gamut, but I think my lane is definitely one of people of color! The aspect of my writing that targets that audience is my passion for my people!

Did the cover evolve the same way, or did you work with someone to make it come together for you?

Yes it did. My illustrator was able to capture us in such a sweet way that we stuck with her design and tweaked it to make it something that me and my family loved!

What are you working on now? Can we get a peek, an excerpt?

I am working on finishing the final touches with my illustrator for my second book, “Through Our Eyes: An Inauguration Day Celebration” . It is a poetic tribute to Madam VP Kamala Harris. It is written in a poetic storytelling style!  It actually is in pre-order right now and you may get it on my website at Here’s an excerpt.

We watched. We watched all day.

We watched with our mommys and aunties and gammys. All of us in our chucks and pearls and t-shirts and colors. Representing in every way. Posing with every snap. In outfits laid out the night before.

Any last words before we wrap things up? I would just like to thank you for the opportunity to interview. Thankful to Portia Smith for putting together this Summer Bookchella. And thanks to everyone that has supported me on this journey.
